The charity for your community
You may have been contacted by the transition team for an adult social care assessment. A social care assessment is conducted by the local authority and first establishes your child’s needs. There is then a financial assessment that decides what contribution, if any, your child needs to make towards the cost of their care. Their income including the benefits they receive are taken into account when the local authority decides how much they need to pay. There are discretionary elements to the charging policy and as consequence there can be variations between different local authorities and different individuals within the same local authority. The charging rules are found in the annexes to the care and support statutory guidance. The largest area of discretion is in disability-related expenditure found in Annex C.
