Who is this course for?

This course is for local Citizens Advice advisers who are or will be delivering Help to Claim and in particular, face to face support. Advisers should have generalist advice level understanding of the benefits system.

Aims

It will introduce advisers to Universal Credit, who is entitled, how UC is calculated and how clients make a claim. In addition, the course will take delegates through the key stages of an online claim and examine the main systemic problems for claimants.

Objectives

By the end of the course delegates will be able to advise more confidently on:

  • Who can claim Universal Credit, who should claim UC and which clients have other options
  • Preparing to make an online claim
  • Key steps through the online claim
  • Support whilst waiting for first payment
  • How Universal Credit is calculated and spotting errors
  • What is the Claimant Commitment
