Who is the course for?

Anyone advising on claiming Universal Credit.

Aims

As Universal Credit rolls out changes in circumstance will mean more and more legacy benefit claimants are faced with the prospect of claiming Universal Credit. These ‘natural migrations’ will not be provided with transitional protection and in many cases will receive less on UC than on legacy benefits.

This course will provide staff and volunteers with the tools needed to understand when a claim for Universal Credit is the only option. There will be particular emphasis on the Severe Disability Premium (SDP) gateway that prevents a claimant being able to claim Universal Credit.

Objectives

At the end of the course delegates will have a good understanding of:

  • Changes in circumstances that can trigger a claim for Universal Credit
  • When the SDP gateway applies to keep claimants on legacy benefits
  • What an adviser can do to protect clients from natural migration on to UC in the future
