This 2-day course is an excellent introduction for new staff, volunteers or those who have changed roles to now include benefits advice. The course has lots of practical case studies, exercises and discussion as well as all the foundation information you need across the social security scheme.

Aim

To raise awareness and increase knowledge of the structure of the Social Security and Tax Credits system in order to help clients maximize their income through claiming appropriate benefits.

Objectives

  • By the end of the course participants will be aware of:
  • The difference between income-related (means tested) benefits, National Insurance based benefits and non-contributory benefits
  • The common rules for income related benefits. Particular emphasis will be given to the specific rules of the means tested benefits premiums
  • How to advise a client on maximising their income by claiming benefits i.e carrying out a “benefits check”
  • Practical advice on making claims and where to get further help and support
