This course provides an introduction to the Social Security system giving an overview of contribution based and non-contributory benefits as well as providing a foundation knowledge for Universal Credit and legacy benefits.

Aim

To raise awareness and increase knowledge of the structure of the Social Security welfare benefit system in order to help clients maximise their income through claiming appropriate benefits.

Objectives

By the end of the course participants will be aware of:

  • Universal Credit and its place in the Social Security system.
  • The difference between contributory and non-contributory benefits and how they work together alongside means tested benefits.
  • The basic rules of entitlement to Personal Independence Payment and Disability Living Allowance.
  • How to support your clients to understand their responsibilities and entitlements
  • How to advise a client on maximising their income by claiming benefits i.e. carrying out a “benefits check”.
